The Soquel Creek Water District, San Lorenzo Valley Water District, City of Santa Cruz, City of Watsonville and the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County congratulates the winners of its "Imagine a Day Without Water" Poster Contest! This fun and enlightening activity, designed to help raise awareness about the critical importance of water to our everyday lives, ran from September 4 through October 2. The 87 entries in the contest offered a variety of art concepts that are big on imagination, creativity, and inspiration - all related to how our community would be impacted if there was no water.
The winners in each category are:
- Elementary School: Caleb Z. (Pacific Coast Charter School), Madison S (Mountain School Independent Studies) and Jessica L. (Watsonville Charter School of the Arts)

- Adult: Carolyn Fetsko, Kim Fleming, and Perla Lopez (New School)
- People's Choice: Paloma (Quail Hollow), Carolyn Fetsko, and Marc M (New School)
Each winner will receive a $50 gift card, and their art will be recognized and displayed at a special "Imagine a Day Without Water" event on October 12. "We want to thank all of the participants in the poster contest for their thoughtful, interesting, and truly outstanding entries," said Soquel Creek Water District Board President Dr. Tom LaHue. "Each and every poster represents a careful consideration of our water supply and what it means to our lives, and brings a higher level of awareness and understanding to the critical water issues we face as a community."
In addition to the winning artwork, the event includes the District's new Pure Water Soquel Education Trailer - an interactive and engaging way to help people learn about the proposed Pure Water Soquel Project and how it fits into the Soquel Creek Water District's Community Water Plan. It includes bright and colorful information panels, educational exhibits, and touchable samples of actual materials involved in the water purification process.
"Imagine a Day Without Water" is the third annual nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water. The art contest asked community members to create a poster that imagines what our community might look like if there was no water to drink, or to make coffee. No water to shower, flush the toilet, or do laundry. No water for hospitals, schools, or businesses, and no water for fighting fires, for fish and other aquatic life, or for farms and ranches. This activity is designed to help reinforce the understanding that safe, reliable water and wastewater services are not just important - they are absolutely essential to our everyday quality of life, for our families, our livelihoods, and our future, and they must be protected and enhanced.
The "Imagine a Day Without Water" Poster Contest was co-sponsored by the Soquel Creek Water District, San Lorenzo Valley Water District, City of Santa Cruz, City of Watsonville and the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County.
